What is a forex swap or overnight rollover charge?

Published by Antos Pinnacles · Updated

A swap is an overnight adjustment associated with carrying a position across the broker's rollover. It can be a debit or credit. Long and short rates, calculation units and day multipliers can differ. MetaTrader lists these settings in its symbol specification documentation.

Which settings matter?

Check the swap calculation type, the rate for your trade direction, the position size and the applicable day's multiplier. A number expressed in points cannot be treated as an amount in dollars without the required conversion.

A deliberately simplified example

Assume a symbol explicitly states a debit of USD 4 per lot for one rollover and the position is 0.25 lot. The charge is 4 × 0.25 = USD 1. If that rollover has a multiplier of 3, the charge is USD 3. These are invented arithmetic inputs, not current Antos Pinnacles rates.

If the same position instead had an explicitly stated credit of USD 2 per lot with a multiplier of 1, the credit would be USD 0.50. A credit alone says nothing about the position's overall profit: the market price may move against it.

Is rollover always charged on the same day?

Do not assume the same schedule across instruments. Consult the current specification and applicable terms. A multi-day multiplier can affect the adjustment even when a position has crossed only one rollover.

Combine financing with spread and commission and the price result. Contact Antos Pinnacles support if the units or schedule are unclear before placing an order.
