In the age of online investing, learning to read risk signals is your first line of defence. Here are five to memorise — save this, and share it with anyone considering an investment.

Signal 1 — Guaranteed returns

No legitimate investment can guarantee returns. Markets carry risk, full stop. Anyone who promises you otherwise is not being honest.

Action: Treat the word "guaranteed" as a stop sign.

Signal 2 — Urgency to deposit

"Limited-time offer." "Slots almost gone." "Invest now or miss out." These are pressure tactics, not advice.

Action: Give yourself at least 24 hours and verify before transferring anything.

Signal 3 — Payment through an unverified channel

Legitimate platforms collect funds only through official, published channels — which may include authorised agents or licensed payment providers. A request to pay an unverified account the platform has not officially listed, with no record or receipt, is a major warning.

Action: Confirm the payment channel is officially authorised before transferring. If you cannot verify it, stop.

Signal 4 — Withdrawal difficulties

If you can deposit easily but cannot withdraw — or are asked to pay extra fees to "release" your money — this is a critical red flag.

Action: Test a small withdrawal early. If it fails, do not deposit more.

Signal 5 — Lack of transparency

No verifiable address. No regulatory licence number. No clear product documentation. If you cannot verify it, you should not invest in it.
